A good computer name is short, readable on a router’s device list, and tells you what the machine does at a glance. On Windows the hard ceiling is 15 characters, so stick to letters, numbers, and hyphens, start with a letter, and never use a name made only of digits. Swap the random “DESKTOP-7QK2LMP” label Windows gives you for something like FROSTFORGE or NAS-VAULT and every device on your network becomes easier to find.

Every name below fits inside the 15-character limit and uses only characters that work as a Windows NetBIOS name, a DNS host name, a macOS local hostname, and a Linux static hostname. That means you can copy any of them straight into the rename box without hitting an error.

NAS, server, and home-lab names

Home-lab machines are where a naming scheme really pays off. Once you have a NAS, a hypervisor, a Pi or two, and a backup box, a consistent theme plus a role tag keeps your SSH sessions and dashboards readable. A simple pattern is role-theme-number, such as nas-orion-01, which stays well under the 15-character Windows limit and the 63-character label limit that DNS uses.

Naming schemes for multi-PC homes

Once a household has a gaming tower, a laptop or two, a NAS, and a living-room box, a scheme stops arguments about which machine is which. Three patterns work well. The first is a theme family, such as planets or Norse gods, where each new machine takes the next name on the list. The second is role plus theme, such as pc-odin, lt-freya, and nas-heimdall, which keeps the role visible in sorted lists. The third is owner plus device, such as mia-tower and mia-laptop, which suits shared family networks where each person manages their own gear. Whatever you pick, write it down in a note so the next build follows the same pattern.

Why rename your PC at all

The default name Windows assigns works, but it becomes a problem the moment you own more than one device. Your router’s client list, a Steam Remote Play host list, Windows file sharing, Parsec or Moonlight streaming, and backup software all identify machines by name. When three entries read DESKTOP-something, you end up guessing which IP address belongs to the tower with the good GPU. A clear name also helps when you sell or hand down a build, since the next owner can see at a glance what the machine was set up for.

Computer naming rules by operating system

The rules differ more than most people expect. Windows inherits limits from NetBIOS, macOS keeps a friendly name separate from its network name, and Linux follows internet host-name standards. If you want one name that works everywhere, follow the strictest column: 15 characters, letters, digits, and hyphens only, and start with a letter.

Rule Windows macOS Linux Source
Maximum length 15 characters (NetBIOS); longer names are cut to 15 when joining a domain Computer name can be longer; the local hostname is what other devices see 63 characters per label, 253 for a full domain name Microsoft Learn naming conventions; Apple Mac User Guide; RFC 1123 and RFC 1035
Characters that are safe Letters A-Z, digits 0-9, hyphen Letters, digits, hyphen (spaces in the computer name become hyphens in the local hostname) Letters, digits, hyphen Microsoft Learn; Apple Mac User Guide
Characters to avoid \ / : * ? ” < > | and periods; DNS also rejects commas, tildes, and exclamation points Symbols and emoji in the local hostname Underscores and symbols in the static hostname Microsoft Learn; hostnamectl documentation
All-numeric names Not allowed for machines in an Active Directory domain Avoid Allowed by RFC 1123 but confusing Microsoft Learn; RFC 1123
Case sensitivity Not case sensitive Local hostnames are not case sensitive Treated as case-insensitive by DNS Apple Mac User Guide
Where to rename Settings > System > About > Rename this PC System Settings > General > About (name) and Sharing (local hostname) hostnamectl set-hostname Microsoft Q&A; Apple Mac User Guide

One more Windows detail from Microsoft’s own documentation: the 16th byte of a NetBIOS name is reserved to identify the type of service on the device, which is why the visible limit stops at 15. Microsoft also notes that names containing a period should be changed, because periods cause trouble with DNS.

How to change your computer name

Windows 11

  1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to System, then About.
  3. Select Rename this PC.
  4. Type the new name (up to 15 characters, letters, numbers, and hyphens) and select Next.
  5. Choose Restart now or Restart later. The new name takes effect after the restart.

You need an administrator account to rename the PC. If the option is greyed out, the machine is probably managed by work or school IT. Two alternatives also work: open the classic System Properties window by pressing Win + R and typing sysdm.cpl, then use Change on the Computer Name tab, or run Rename-Computer -NewName "FROSTFORGE" -Restart in an elevated PowerShell window.

macOS

Apple’s Mac User Guide splits this into two steps. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > About and click the current name to edit it. To change the network-facing local hostname separately, go to General > Sharing and click Edit next to Local hostname at the bottom of the window. If another Mac on the network already has the same name, macOS adds a number to keep them apart.

Linux

On systemd distributions such as Ubuntu and Fedora, run sudo hostnamectl set-hostname nas-orion-01. The static hostname must follow the letters, digits, and hyphens rule. You can also set a “pretty” hostname with spaces for display only. Update /etc/hosts if anything on the box refers to the old name.

Tips for making your own

The fastest way to a name you won’t regret is to combine one word from each column below, check the length, and read it out loud. If you can say it over a voice call without spelling it, it’s a keeper.

Prefix (vibe) Core (object) Suffix (role or tag)
Frost Forge -PC
Night Bench -ITX
Volt Core -01
Iron Vault -NAS
Ember Tower -LAB
Cobalt Loop -WS
Storm Rig -HTPC
  • Count before you commit. “IronVault-NAS” is 13 characters and fits. “CobaltTower-HTPC” is 16 and will get cut on a domain join.
  • Put the role in the name for anything headless. When a router lists twenty devices, nas, pve, and pi prefixes save time.
  • Avoid personal details. “Jamies-Laptop” announces your name to everyone on public Wi-Fi.
  • Skip lookalike characters. A capital I next to a lowercase l or a zero next to the letter O makes typing the name into SSH or a network path annoying.
  • Use hyphens, not underscores. Underscores are not valid in DNS host names and can break name resolution.
  • Keep a theme per network. If the tower is Odin and the laptop is Freya, the next build already has a name waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum length for a Windows computer name?

Fifteen characters. Microsoft Learn explains that Windows keeps NetBIOS compatibility, which reserves the 16th character for a service identifier. If you join a domain with a longer name, Windows shortens it to 15 characters automatically.

Can a computer name be only numbers?

Not if the machine joins an Active Directory domain. Microsoft documents that all-numeric names are blocked because of DNS restrictions. Even on a home network, start the name with a letter to stay clear of problems.

Does renaming my PC break anything?

On a home machine, usually not. Mapped network drives, shortcuts that point to \\OLDNAME, and some licensing or remote-access tools may need the new name. Restart after renaming and update any saved network paths.

Can I use spaces in a computer name?

Not in a Windows or Linux hostname. macOS lets the friendly computer name include spaces, but its local hostname swaps those spaces for hyphens, so “Studio Mac” becomes Studio-Mac.local on the network.

Why does my new PC have a name like DESKTOP-ABC1234?

Windows generates a random name during setup if you don’t choose one. It works fine, but it tells you nothing when you look at a device list, so renaming is worth the two minutes.

Should my NAS and my gaming PC follow the same naming theme?

It helps. A shared theme with a role prefix, such as nas-odin and pc-thor, makes it obvious which box is which in a file manager, a router page, or a backup log.
